The Nico Gusella via ferrata offers a grand and amazingly scenic itinerary that makes the hikers discover one of the most renowned peaks of the Pale di San Martino, Mount Cima di Ball, that was first reached in 1865 by Mr. Leslie Stephen, one of the great English climbing pioneers, father of Virginia Woolf. The peak of this excursion, that features a very pleasant and easy via ferrata, is reaching the summit of Mount Cima di Ball from where the view is astonishingly thrilling.

Information about Nico Gusella via ferrata
The Nico Gusella via ferrata, relatively short (with a 250 meters elevation gain) and little exposed, develops mostly through the north side of Mount Cima di Ball and it climbs along sloped slabs and characteristic chimneys up to Forcella Stephen, at an elevation of 2705 meters, between Mount Cima di Ball and Mount Cima di Val di Roda. The itinerary, then, goes on through a thrilling climb, that does not feature any technical issue, all the way to the summit of Mount Cima di Ball. From there the view on all the other peaks of the Pale di San Martino Range is spectacular.
The excursion starts from San Martino di Castrozza; with the cable cars of Colverde and Rosetta we reach Rifugio Pedrotti, at an elevation of 2581 meters from where -after a 400 meters elevation gain- the approach starts; it develops through a very beautiful path featuring breath taking passages before the Pale di San Martino among couloirs, cols, ledges, crees and rock towers. The long way back from Mount Cima di Ball (roughly a 1700 meters elevation loss) at first follows the climb route until Forcella Stephen and then it offers several different options that will all lead back to San martino di Castrozza.
