Mount Ortler is the highest peak in the Southern Limestone Alps in South Tyrol. It is a massive dolomite mountain surrounded by a wide glacial cap from where several rocky ridges and ice couloirs stretch out. Mount Ortler provides one of the most thrilling ski mountaineering itineraries in all the Alps.

The path starts from Trafoi and it crosses Vallone di Plaies and the north-east side of the mountain. The ski mountaineering excursion to Ortler is a demanding hike featuring a notable elevation gain. A marvelous itinerary that, from the green meadows, leads to the white glacial expanses of the top cupola.

Information about the ski mountaineering to Ortler

The ski mountaineering to Ortler (Ortles) starts from the parking lot in the small village of Tre Fontane, Trafoi. The path goes up to the little Church crossing the bridge and it keeps going through the woods along the summer trail. After reaching Rifugio Borletti, at an elevation of 2188 meters, the path keeps going under the west ridge going up in mild declivity through a hollow that reaches an elevation of 2800 meters.

As they keep going, the hikers will reach a small dip from where they will get to the base of a steep slope that leads to “Buca dell’Orso” (Bärenloch), a marvelous wide hollow. Passing a bivouac, the climb keeps steep to the shoulder.

Through a crag, then, the path leads right under a steep slope. Once on the upper plateau, the hikers will head south and they will go around an ice hill and they will go towards the summit that is reached through a short stretch on the ridge.

The descent offers a marvelous ski ride and it takes place through the climb route.

The ski mountaineering to Mount Ortler can be done in about 8 hours. It features a development of about twelve kilometers and a 2310 meter elevation gap. It reaches a maximum elevation of 3896 meters and it is rated as OSA (very good ski mountaineer). Pick and crampons are definitely needed, as it is some glacier experience.
