The summit of Mount Pollux (Monte Polluce) touches 4091 meters, while Mount Castor (Monte Castore) reaches an elevation of 4226 meters.

Information about the ski mountaineering to Pollux and Castor Mountains

Day One: Cervinia - Mount Pollux (Monte Polluce) - Rifugio Guide Ayas
The excursion starts from Cervinia, at an elevation of 2050 meters. The hikers will take the cable car and they will reach Plateau Rosà, at an elevation of 3480 meters. On their skis, the hikers will get to Piccolo Cervino,3883 meters, (Klein Matterhorn) and the marvelous plain Colle del Breithorn. After crossing the plain under mounts Breithorn and Roccia Nera, the path gets under bivouac Bivacco Rossi Volante. Passing, then, Mount Porta Nera, the hikers will start their climb towards the summit of Mount Pollux (Polluce), 4091 meters, from where a thrilling ski ride will lead them to Rifugio Guide Ayas, at an elevation of 3420 meters. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day Two: Rifugio Guide d’Ayas - Mount Castor (Monte Castore) - Cervinia
The path resumes from Rifugio Guide Ayas and it goes up through Verra Glacier until the namesake hill. The hikers, then, will start a climb through the west side and after a short and extremely spectacular stretch on the ridge they will go up to the summit of mount Castor (4226 meters). The path goes back to Plateau Rosà through the climb route before going down to Cervinia with a super fun ski ride and getting back to the starting point.

As an alternative, the hikers can get back to Cervinia with a transfer and they will go down to Champoluc through Verra Glacier (Ghiacciaio di Verra).

The ski mountaineering tour to Mount Pollux (Monte Polluce) and to Mount Castor (Monte Castore) is an itinerary for expert off-piste skiers mastering the skiing techniques on all kind of snow and on steep slopes. It features declivities up to 40° and it is rated as BSA/OSA (Good Ski Mountaineer / Very Good Ski Mountaineer); it features some mountaineering stretches that might have to be faced with pick and crampons.
