The backcountry ski excursion starts from the little square of the village, at an elevation of 1035 meters, in front of the city hall and the bar. After taking the street to Sulmona, after a very short stretch the itinerary keeps going up freely. After passing a few clearings the path keeps going on the ridge - the "Cesa del Gatto" - until it goes out of the woods before reaching a small rifugio, at an elevation of 1688 meters.
As they keep climbing on the wide hump in constant declivity, the hikers will go up to a little crown that they will go round to reach a col, right under the summit. With no obligated path, then, the itinerary shortly reaches the summit of Mount Rotella, at an elevation of 2129 meters, with its Cross and its monument to the Alpini.
The descent can take place through the climb route or, once reached the hump under the summit, it can follow the bottom of valley Vallone di Rotella, narrow and squeezed. Both paths guarantee an extremely rewarding ski ride.
The backcountry ski excursion to Mount Rotella from Rocca Pia is rated as MS (mid grade skier). It features 1100 meter total elevation gap and it can be done in about 5 hours.
