The excursion to Tristenspitz - Cima dei Covoni, at an elevation of 2716 meters, is a thrilling, complete and averagely demanding ski mountaineering experience in the wonderful environment of the Alpi Aurine Range. It does not feature extreme technical issues but the declivity is relevant in some stretches where pick and crampons are needed.

The excursion starts from Rio Bianco, in the Valle Aurina (Aurina Valley). After a short stretch along the forest track, we climb up through a beautiful wood and we head west towards Malga Stifteralm. As we keep climbing we cross a first steep slope along the north side of Mount Ringelstein that leads to a less steep stretch. After crossing a nice little valley, Mount Lappacher Joechl and the peak of Mount Covoni come in sight in all their majesty.

Through the Alta Via Kellerbauer trail we get to Forcella di Lappago - Lappacher Joechl, where the view opens marvelous on Valle di Anterselva and on the mounts of Fundres. After climbing the steep south side of Mount Tristenspitz we reach the base of the rocky wall under the summit. The last stretch is pretty technical, often requiring pick and crampons. The descent takes place through the climb route.

The ski mountaineering excursion to Tristenspitz, Cima dei Covoni features a 1330 meters elevation gain and loss. It requires good training and mastering of technical skills of ski mountaineering and is rated as BSA (Good Ski Mountaineer). Maximum incline is 40 degrees.
