Information about the ski mountaineering in Mount Antelao

The ski mountaineering in the Mount Antelao requires the implementation of a variety of alpine techniques:  we climb with sealskins, crampons and pick, using ropes while climbing as a group; we descend particularly steep stretches or overcome cliffs and we freeride on skis.

The first part of the itinerary starts with ski mountaineering, taking us first to Forcella Piccola and the start of the Lindemann couloir, which we negotiate with crampons and pick. After a second stretch in the couloir, we climb the famous Antelao slabs on skis, reaching the Cosi Bivouac (currently swept away by a landslide); we leave our equipment there and proceed again with crampons and pick.

To reach the summit cross we must continue along the spellbinding, narrow, and exposed summit ridge. The satisfaction of reaching the summit and the incredibly beautiful view encompassing all the Dolomites are the just reward for the energy spent in overcoming 1700 meters in elevation gain.

The descent, still very rewarding, is handled on skis following along the climbing route.

Starting from Rifugio Scotter, the ski mountaineering excursion to the Antelao Mountain has an elevation gain of 1700 meters both on the way up and down or 2150 meters from San Vito di Cadore; it requires good training and knowledge of ski mountaineering techniques because of its OSA (Excellent Ski Mountaineering Skills) rating. Maximum incline is 45 degrees.
