The Ortler, 3905 m, is the highest peak in the Eastern Alps in South Tyrol. It is a massive dolomite mountain surrounded by a wide glacial cap from where several rocky ridges and ice couloirs stretch out. Mount Ortler provides one of the most thrilling alpine climbing routes in all the Alps, such as the mountaineering ascent along the Ortler Hochjochgrat Ridge, also known as Cresta del Giogo Alto.

Ortler Hochjochgrat Ridge Route

This mountaineering ascent to the Ortler is a classic itinerary that leads to the summit via the severe Hochjochgrat Ridge (Cresta del Giogo Alto). It is a climb that develops on mixed terrain with snow ridges with delicate traverses, passages of III and some of IV.

Climbing to the summit of Mount Ortler along the Hochjochgrat Ridge requires 2 days:

Day One, from Valfurva to Rifugio Quinto Alpini
Day Two, from Rifugio Quinto Alpini to the top and returning via the Normal Route.
