Information about the off-piste skiing to Joel couloir

We begin our off-piste skiing to Joel couloir by boarding the Sass Pordoi cable car that takes us to Rifugio Maria at an elevation of 2950 meters, one of the most panoramic points in the Dolomites. Once we reach the summit we negotiate a first warm-up descent along the couloir starting from Forcella Pordoi and taking us back to the start of the lift. Back on top, we ski down to the beginning of the slope leading to the pass reaching the start of the Joel couloir.

After a short climb, with the skis on our back we reach the access point of the couloir facing the Marmolada and the north Face of the Gran Vernel. The start often includes a characteristic aerial section on a very steep wide cornice, a great photo opportunity. The itinerary continues along the couloir through a narrow natural arch formed by the mountain’s vertical faces to the exit leading into gentle slopes leading to the Pordoi Pass or Arabba: there we are ready to face more off-piste runs.

The freeride ski excursion to the Joel Couloir has an elevation loss of about 2100 meters in the off-piste skiing section. It requires good training and great technical skiing skills because of its OS (Excellent Skier) rating. Maximum incline is 45 degrees.
