The Monte Rosa Range is the main and vastest massif in the Alps. It includes 18 4000 meter high main peaks. Mount Punta Dufour with its 4637 meters is the second highest of the Alps. The access to high elevation is fast and made easy by the cable cars. The several 4000s of the Mount Monte Rosa Range attract mountaineers from all over the world.

This backcountry skiing tour climbs up Punta Giordani (4046 meters), Mount Punta Nifetti (4554 meters) where the hikers will find the famous Capanna Margherita Hut, Europe's highest rifugio, and Mount Pollux (4092 meters) offers unforgettable emotions and adventures and incredibly rewarding ski rides.

Information about the backcountry skiing in Monte Rosa

The backcountry skiing in Monte Rosa offers a three day excursions starting from Staffal (Gressoney), Alagna or Frachey (Champoluc), the skiers will take the cable car and they will go up to Indren, at an elevation of 3275 meters. The overnight stay will all be in high mountain, in the characteristic rifugios that can be found through the path.

Day One of the Monte Rosa backcountry skiing
The tour starts from the top station of the Indren cable car and, with a marvelous climb that takes three or four hours, it leads to the summit of Mount Punta Giordani. The descent through the south side provides a marvelous ski ride on firn in the warmest hours. The path, then, goes up to Rifugio Mantova or to Rifugio Gnifetti. Dinner and overnight stay.

On the second day it is possible to connect several 4000s to end up, anyway, on Punta Gnifetti where the skiers will have the chance to enjoy the wonderful views from the highest rifugio in the Alps, Capanna Margherita. A fantastic ski ride, then, will lead to one of the most spectacular glaciers of all the Alps, Glacier Grenz. It features a wild and thrilling environment. The ski descent towards Furi and towards the Zermatt cable car is a unique experience. The ski ride through glacier Ghiacciaio del Grenz leads to the cable car that will bring the skiers to Mount Klein Matterhorn (Piccolo Cervino). The mountaineers, then, will spend the night either at Rifugio Teodulo or at Rifugio Guide del Cervino.

Two possible paths can bring back; traversing Mount Castore all the way to Mount Colle del Felik and going down through glaciers Ghiacciaio del Felik and Ghiacciaio del Lys to Salza, above the Stafal a Gressoney cable car or going up to the summit of Mount Pollux -an easy and fun climb with an equipped stretch- before going down through glacier Gran Ghiacciaio di Verra until Piani di Verra. A long and spectacular ski ride that develops in a marvelous valley covering a 2000 meter elevation loss. From Piani di Verra, walking or by a car transfer, the hikers will reach Champoluc cable car that will take them to Mount Colle della Bettaforca before they go back to Gressoney and then to Alagna.
