The backcountry ski excursion starts from the parking lot in Pont Valsavarenche, at an elevation of 1960 meters. Through the cross-country ski track the path goes up skirting the river before crossing it on a nice little bridge close to Rifugio Tetras Lyre. In a marvelous environment, then, the itinerary goes up towards Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele taking the summer mule track. The rifugio, at an elevation of 2732 meters, provides the ideal environment for a stop.

From the rifugio the contour of the side of Mount Monte Ciarforon comes in sight clean and majestic. The itinerary, then, resumes marvelous and it goes up towards Mount Ciarforon and Mount Becca di Monciair. With an exposed traverse the hikers will pass a first rocky rampart before facing a marrow passage and a stretch on vertical snow that leads to another rocky rampart.

The path, then, goes up through a steep little couloirs squeezed between the rocks. Shortly, then, the path reaches the summit cap -often covered with ice- and it keeps going all the way to the rocky tips that offers a wide and marvelous view on the peaks on the Piemonte side of the Gran Paradiso Massif.

The very beautiful descent ski ride takes place through the climb route. From the snowy base between Mount Ciarforon and Mount Monciar, it is possible to go down back towards the rifugio or to complete a spectacular loop traversing and going down through valley Vallone del Grand Etret to go back to the parking lot in Pont Valsavarenche.

The ski mountaineering excursion through the west side of Mount Monte Ciarforon from Pont Valsavarenche is rated as BS (good skier); it features a 1680 meter total elevation gap (772 meter to Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II).
