The ski mountaineering excursion Traversata della Provvidenza, together with the Traversata Alta and the Traversata Bassa of Corno Grande, is one of the most classic traverses in the Gran Sasso area. The itinerary develops in a silent, solitary and majestic environment, before the highest peaks of the whole mountainous range.
The path crosses the wide hump of Campo Pericoli, the hump of Venacquaro and the very beautiful valley Valle del Chiarino and it reaches lake Lago della Provvidenza, northern border of the Gran Sasso Range. A long path (more than twenty kilometers) among evocative cols and valleys, passing through majestic peaks: Mount Corno Grande, Mount Pizzo Intermesoli and Mount Corvo.
This itinerary does not feature any particular technical issues and it is a high class path, among the most beautiful in the Apennines Range.
The ski mountaineering to Gran Sasso starts from Campo Imperatore at an elevation of 2130 meters. The path goes up straight through the ridge that leads to Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi from where the hikers can enjoy a grand view on Campo Imperatore.
Going down north the path enters the underlying couloir. After a short steep stretch (35°) the slope gets milder and the path enters hump Conca di Campo Pericoli. Passing sweet hills and beautiful valleys the path gets under the couloir that comes down from col Sella dei Grilli, at the beginning of valley Val Maone, at an elevation of 1870 meters.
Through the wide couloir the path goes up straight until just under col Sella dei Grilli from where, through some easy slopes, the path goes down to the underlying hump Conca del Venacquaro and to the base of the wide couloir that comes down from col Sella di Monte Corvo.
The itinerary, then, passes Sella del Venacquaro and Forchetta della Falasca. At an elevation of about 2300 meters the skiers will take off their seal skins for the last time and they will go down to the underlying valley. The path keeps going passing the fold of Solagna (shelter for shepherds) and Rifugio Fioretti, at an elevation of 1503 meters.
Following the street, then, the hikers will pass the last clearings and they will enter the Chiarino woods; among high beeches the path passes little church Chiesetta di San Martino and it reaches the Cappelli farm. Following the road the route reaches the Provvidenza dam.
