The ski mountaineering to Punta San Matteo starts from the parking lot by Rifugio dei Forni, reachable from S.Caterina Valfurva along the road that goes up to Val dei Forni. 

A beautiful little street goes up passing the dam. Going up through the evocative valley, the hikers will pass Rifugio Branca and they will reach the base of the Forni Glacier (Ghiacciaio dei Forni). Passed a wide valley that goes down from Mount Pizzo San Giacomo, the path reaches the beautiful glacier and it goes up skirting it. After a flat stretch the climb resumes on a few slopes with crevasses and it leads to the base of the north side of Mount San Matteo. Heading to the summit, then, the path goes towards a flat stretch. Through a very beautiful section, then, the hikers will get to the base of the last slopes that, rather steep, will lead them to the ridge and, shortly, to the summit. The descent takes place through the climb route. The ski ride is very fun and rewarding.

The ski mountaineering excursion to Mount San Matteo can be done in 5/7 hours and it is considered a demanding itinerary. The ascent faces east and north, the descent faces north. It features a 1500 meter elevation gain, both climbing and going down. It is rated as BSA (good ski mountaineers).
