Mount Cevedale (3769 meters) is one of the most sought after and popular mountaineering destinations in the range of the Alpi Retiche. It rises at the intersection of three valleys, Val di Pejo, Valfurva and Val Martello, but it can be reached from Val di Solda as well. This mountain can be easily reached tanks to the many rifugios that surround it. Mount Cevedale is also the fulcrum of the Ortles-Cevedale range and the heart of Stelvio National Park.
The ski mountaineering excursion to its summit develops in an evocative and spectacular glacial environment. It is a relatively easy and greatly rewarding path providing an evocative climb and a super fun ski ride.
The ski mountaineering to Mount Cevedale from Val Martello starts from Rifugio Genziana at an elevation of 2051 meters and follows two possible routes:
Option 1
From Rifugio Martello (Marteller Hütte), at an elevation 2610 meters, the path goes up through Vedretta del Cevedale until it reaches the top part of the glacier. Turning west and passing under the evident rocky ridge that goes up to Mount Cevedale, through a very scenic stretch the hikers will reach a wide valley at an elevation of about 3200 meters. A steep slope, then, leads to the upper section and to the final plateau. A last steep stretch leads to the secondary summit on the north-east ridge. The summit, then, is reached through a rather mild path. The new summit Cross will welcome the hikers that can enjoy an unforgettable landscape. The beautiful and rewarding ski descent takes place through the climb route.
Option 2
The excursion starts from Rifugio Nino Corsi (Zufallhütte), at an elevation of 2265 meters. An evocative and sweet progression gradually leads to Vedretta Lunga that, in turn, leads by Passo del Lago Gelato and then, under Mount Cima di Solda, all the way to Rifugio Casati (3269 meters). The path, then, keeps going south-east going up in moderation through the glacier before facing a last steeper stretch that leads to the secondary summit and then, on milder declivity, to te summit Cross of Mount Cevedale. From there the ski mountaineers can enjoy an unforgettable view. The beautiful and rewarding descent ski ride takes place through the climb route.
The ski mountaineering to Mount Cevedale from Val Martello is rated as MSA (mid grade ski mountaineer) and BSA (good ski mountaineer) in the last stretch. Part of the path develops on glacier or on demanding ground and it is, then, advisable to bring the complete ski mountaineering and first aid equipment.
