Mount Dent d'Hérens is a very beautiful mountain that rises in the Pennine Alps, in the Weisshorn and Matterhorn Alps. Its proximity to the "Gran Becca" (Matterhorn - Mount Cervino) often stole some "visibility" to this peak that offers really interesting mountaineering challanges. Its bulk is a majestic yet very elegant pyramid.
The ski mountaineering excursion to the summit of Dent d'Hérens features a very beautiful and exciting itinerary. Its final part (a mountaineering section) develops on a steep slope, often covered with ice. The stretch on the ridge is very aerial and it provides marvelous views on the west side of Mount Cervino and on several 4000s of this area.
Day one of the ski touring in Valpelline
From the Place Moulin dam, at an elevation of 1950 meters, a nice little street skirts the lake and it goes up to the alpine pastures of Prarayer, at an elevation of 2005 meters. The path keeps going through the summer trail, or -with a lot of snow- crossing the little bridge.
The skiers will, then, go through the wide and evocative plains until the seracs of glacier Ghiacciaio di Tsa de Tsan and -passing some equipped steps- they will reach Rifugio Aosta, at an elevation of 2788 meters, in its marvelous position right at the base of the south-west ridge of Mount Tête de Valpelline. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day two of the ski touring in Valpelline
From the rifugio the path goes down through the steep slopes that lead to glacier Ghiacciaio delle Grandes Murailles and, passing a wide area crossed by some crevasses, it reaches a wide plain that leads to the ridge. Leaving the skis, with pick and crampons the hikers will climb the overhead wall until they will pop out on the west ridge, at an elevation of 3920 meters.
As it keeps going the path goes round some rocky towers and it reaches the secondary summit from where, through the aerial ridge, the mountaineers will get to the main peak. The descent ski ride is absolutely priceless and it takes place through the climb route.
The ski mountaineering tour to Mount Dent d'Hérens features a 4/5 hour itinerary for the first day and a 6 hour itinerary for the second day and it is rated as OSA (very good ski mountaineer). The first day elevation gain is 831 meters, while the second day elevation gain is 1398 meters. The itinerary faces west, both during the climb and the descent.
