Mount Colle Grand Etret is a particularly fascinating and evocative mountain. The ski mountaineering excursion to its summit offers a very beautiful itinerary that develops marvelously immersed in the absolute quiet of Gran Paradiso National Park.
A relatively easy itinerary featuring, though, a notable development. It provides the hikers with very beautiful slopes and it gives them the chance to divide the excursion in two days by spending the night at Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele. The descent from the summit provides a priceless and thrilling ski ride and unforgettable emotions.
Day one of Colle Grand Etret ski mountaineering tour
From Pont Valsavaranche to Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele
Start: Pont Valsavaranche (1956 meters)
Arrival: Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele (2735 meters)
Elevation gap: 779 meters
The excursion starts from the little village of Pont Valsavaranche, from the parking lot of a hotel. Going up heading south the path skirts creek Torrente Savara all the way to Rifugio Tetras Lyre. Through the summer trail, then, the hikers will cross a very beautiful larch wood. Once they reach the ruins of Chanté they will leave the trail and they will keep going on a steep slope until they will reach a wide couloir that leads directly to Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele, at an elevation of 2735 meters.
Day two of Colle Grand Etret ski mountaineering tour
From Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele to Colle Grand Etret
Elevation gain: about 700 meters
Elevation loss: about 1500 meters
From the rifugio the path goes up heading for the base of the north-west spur of Mount Ciarforon and it keeps going through glacier Ghiacciao di Monciair. The hikers will, then, cross the north-west buttress of Mount Becca di Monciair and they will pass under the Denti di Broglio before reaching the edge of glacier Ghiacciaio del Grand Etret and going up south all the way to the summit of Colle Grand Etret. The spectacular descent ski ride develops on very beautiful, north facing slopes that will lead the hikers back to Pont.
From Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele the descent offers three options: through the climb route, through the itinerary of Grand Etret, or heading south to cross creek Chanté before going down on wide slopes. After crossing the creek again, the path connects to the climb route.
The two day ski mountaineering tour to Colle Grand Etret from Pont Valsavaranche with overnight at Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele is rated as BS (good skier). It covers a total 1500 meter elevation gap.
